I believe Garou is better than most people say. He has I-frames, has one of the best passives in the game, and extreme combo potential. These factors make him the best character for dealing with teamers but allow me to elaborate further.
First, according to the unofficial wiki of The Strongest Battlegrounds, Garous's passive is that he heals whenever he performs a finisher, healing a different range of health per finisher (Hunters Grasp 20%, Lethal Whirlwind Stream 30%, Flowing Water 35%, Preys Peril 40%) this is important because unlike other battlegrounds where everyone gets healed on finisher, Garou is the only one with this feature making him an easy pick for killing teamers. Characters like Genos also have passive good for teaming, however, that's all they are good for. Genos has the passive, "Recharge" a passive that resets the cooldown for all moves, however, it's not that useful outside of teaming situations given most of the time you're not going to get in a fight after a 1v1 immediately. Garous passive, "Monstrous" has more uses because it heals the user and allows them to get into combat without worrying as much about their health. It also helps with dealing with targeters and people who come back frequently due to you having more health than what you beat them with.
Next, according to the same article/page, all of Garous's moves have I-frames on hit, meaning you only take damage from I-frame-breaking moves. This matters because in teaming situations, it's nearly impossible to start full-on combos due to teamers interrupting attacks before they start and even while they're in motion. This makes Garou even better for teaming situations. Characters like Sonic and Genos have little to no I-frames making them very risky to use as an anti-teaming deterrent.
Additionally, the page states that Garou has the fastest M1 startup and speed, which makes it much easier to commit to M1 trading. This aspect is extremely useful for 1v1s, unlike characters like Metal Bat, who cannot use M1 trading due to their slow M1 speed.
Finally, even though Garou relies on techs, he has a huge variety of techs and it is almost impossible to call just Garou out on this due to every character having ping-reliant techs (shove tech, French fries, etc) but because Garou has an abundance of techs he can adapt to nearly any and all situations.
In conclusion, Garou receives more hate than he deserves because he is a close-range fighter who relies on multiple techs. However, he is the perfect fighter for combat teamers.
there's a difference between good combo potential and flashy combo potential, and garou's is the falshy one unfortunately, since other characters are way more versatile with more moves that hit grounded opponents, and also when getting teamed on, genos is perfect because you can combo one enemy right after the other, and metal bat can in fact m1 trade, is just that community sucks at the game, i almost always succeed my m1 trades with every character, and it's very rarely you'll get in a m1 trading situation anyway while fighting teamers cuz passive playstyle is not suitable in such pressure, also i am pretty sure saitama m1s and sonic m1s are faster, by the way the fact you can miss the parry even if someone hits you is just diabolical, and unlike atomic parry, his parry can be f*cking parried by another person, and also they can just run and buy time if one of them is low, and since garou is slow as f*ck, you can't do sh*t, even if you catch up, and other player can hold you back from getting closer, and also, since garou don't get cooldown reset, after you do a combo you're basically disabled, he also has no range so he can't do anything about projectiles, and before you say you can parry that sh*t, say hello to splash dmg, yea, he can't counter the AoE of the projectile, and sonic's projectile is the only one you can reflect back anyway cuz genos blitz shot doesn't have any end lag, so countering it won't even do anything except wasting a get out jail free card from combos, it's just way better to hold block and tank the chip dmg instead, so garou is not better than most characters, also his AoE attacks are hard to hit due to the fact they are very visible and they can dodge easily.
Saitama best, change my mind
yea no one can change that, saitama is good overall, and once you master him he is op, just look at those videos with the inescapable one shot combos. 💀💀💀
